RBB was commissioned by Dignity Health to provide a master plan, design and construction services for a 267,000 square foot replacement hospital. The 196-bed facility more than doubled patient capacity and offered services not previously available in Merced, including trauma care and invasive cardiovascular surgery and neurosurgery.
Lean planning and design strategies resulted in the most cost efficient hospital in Dignity Health’s history. Extraordinary savings were achieved in the construction cost, energy use, and operational cost.
Significant to the planning of the hospital is the Lean Planning approach that resulted in space savings of approximately 25% compared to average community hospitals (1450 SF/Bed vs. 1850 SF/Bed). The space savings were achieved without sacrificing the assignable space.
