RBB Architects Inc was engaged by Catholic Healthcare West (CHW) to prepare a programming and Pre-Schematic design for a 2013 Master Plan for Mercy San Juan Medical Center located in the City of Carmichael, California. RBB developed the Pre-Schematic design based on user review meetings with Administration and Staff representing the different departments involved. Several options were studied and the one chosen as the pre-schematic design guideline minimizes the necessity of moving existing departments in order to expand other departments. It is also capable of incremental growth in multiple phases.

The 2013 Master Plan will provide increase of Medical / Surgical and Maternity beds, improve the existing ratio of double to private beds, increase imaging capacity, provide new lobby, gift shop and chapel and creation of healing gardens, provide new admission and registration, provide new satellite dietary facilities, provide new Conference Center, additional parking structure for patients, visitors and staff, central plant expansion and expand administration (including physician facilities), Facilities / Biomed, laboratory, AOU, Laundry and Pharmacy.

The Master Plan proposes the construction of a six-story tower with a partial basement adjacent to the existing main hospital tower and the remodel and expansion of existing departments at several floors. The new tower includes a lobby, gift shop, Chapel, satellite dietary services, conference center, ancillary support and the Medical Surgical and Post Partum beds needed to satisfy the projected patient demand.
