Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Outpatient Surgery Facility

AIA Design Award

Location of Project
Los Angeles, California

Square Footage
40,000 square feet

Cost
$8.5 million

This $8.5 million, 40,000 square foot seismic upgrade and remodel project recycled a 1969 bank / office building concrete frame structure. The building was completely gutted and redesigned to comply with ADA and OSHPD requirements in order to function as an outpatient facility.

The design concept was based on seismically retrofitting the existing structure, adding new lobbies and elevators, and connecting the new exit corridors with conforming new exit stairs at the north & south. The building is sheathed in a skin of gray slate, insulated green glass and silk-screened spandrel art glass with vertical aluminum fins and articulated pilasters.

A public pedestrian plaza and bus shelter were created along Beverly Boulevard by demolishing an existing one story structure. One of the plaza walls features an art project by a contemporary artist. The overall design presents an articulate and modern vision of the direction of outpatient healthcare that will last well into the 21st century.
